Our Eugene Story

By: , CEO and co-founder of Nerds On Call, an on-site computer and laptop repair service company.

Nerds were looking to expand further North after starting in that direction with the opening of the Medford store in 2008. We had already made that first step into the colder northern territories, and we couldn’t get enough of the beautiful Oregon countryside. So we decided to set our sights on Eugene and to see where it took us.

Merl Valles, our fearless Admiral of Northward Expansion, headed up to Oregon in 2009 and started an office for Nerds On Call Computer Repair Eugene. This was the second store founded in Oregon and was followed in the same year by the founding of the Portland store. At the time, he was working out of a hotel room! Fortunately, we’ve since made the transition to a proper office. Considering how popular we’ve become in Eugene that has definitely been a good decision!

Eugene was the first city that we moved into that had one-way streets all over the place. Sure, we’d dealt with one or two here or there in our home city of Redding, but the newly-minted Nerds of Nerds On Call Computer Repair Eugene had another challenge to deal with when they first learned to navigate the streets. Fortunately, we’ve become pros at it – and haven’t caused any major traffic incidents in the process!

Interestingly enough, the year that we expanded into Eugene and Portland, 2009, was also the first year that Nerds On Call Computer Repair placed in the INC 5000, a yearly list of the fastest-growing companies in the United States. We could claim that it was the good people of Eugene that made that possible, but we don’t have any solid proof for that. Nevertheless, thank you!

We have a solid contingent of Nerds here in Eugene. Benjamin Gross is a huge Harry Potter fan, which is pretty much instant Nerd status, as anyone knows. Russell is another automatic Nerd – because he looks exactly like our Nerd mascot! If you ever have the privilege of having Russell work on your computer, you’ll see exactly what we’re talking about.

Also, there’s Josh, avid Salmon fisher.

When they’re not hard at work at Nerds On Call Computer Repair, Eugene Nerds love to visit Voodoo Doughnuts. Something has to keep them running besides caffeine!

We’ve had a great time in Eugene for the past few years and we hope to share many more with you! We’ve gotten to know quite a number of customers who have since become friends as well. Feel free to let us know how we’re doing – we always want to hear from you on how we can better serve your needs. Whether it’s a service we should offer, a comment on our Nerds, or a word of encouragement, we would love to talk with you. Much thanks from all of us here at Nerds On Call to all of you in Eugene!
