Makeover that old Computer Part Five: Backup and Save

Now that your computer is clean, it is time to learn how to keep your documents and files safe. There is nothing worse than spending hours on that paper—when disaster strikes and it vanishes!  Many things cause your computer to crash and in some cases you lose all your important data/music/photos. There are three options available in order to ensure your files are safe:

1. USB Flash Drive (Thumb Drive)-flash drives are small devices that plug into your USB port and allow you to save files directly to them. You can use these to make backup copies or even to transfer the data from one computer to another. Using a flash drive is simple. Just plug the thumb drive into the USB port, then go to the document or file you want to save, choose “save as” and change the save destination to the drive (usually drive f:).  You can also open up drive f:  through “my computer” and drag files or documents you want to save directly on the drive.

2. External Backup Drive– Like a flash drive, a backup drive is is an external device used to  backup your data. The difference is external drives are larger and remain stationary on your desk.  Backup drives usually come with software that allows you to schedule times where it will automatically backup your data.  Follow the directions that come with the drive.

3. Online Backup– There are online backup options available. Companies like Carbonite and Mozy provide a subscription service where you can use their online software to back up your data off site to their secure servers.
