Home Network Setup
You might need a nerd if…
- You can’t get your TV to connect to your smartphone
- You’re tired of having to manage six remote control devices
- Your WiFi is unpredictable or patchy
- You want to get all your shared files on a network
A few cool things you can do with a home network
A lot of our customers aren’t aware of the cool things you can do once your home network is properly configured. Here are a few highlights.Send your computer/device’s view to your TV
Any TV made in the last ten years or so is likely to have some kind of connectivity built into it. This means it can join your home network and be accessed from other devices, like smartphones and laptops.Control all your home theater components from one interface
A home network also means that your devices suddenly become a lot easier to manage. Music, movies, TV, cable, even lighting and climate control! They can all be brought together into one control interface, such as your iPhone or iPad. Here’s an example of the difference that makes. Without a home network, if you wanted to stop watching Netflix and turn on some music, you’d need to grab the controller for Netflix and press stop. Then you’d need to grab your TV remote and change the HDMI channel to the music device. Then you’d need to grab the music controller and fire up some songs. Sure, it’s doable, but why take all those steps when you don’t have to? Using a home network you could pick up your iPad, choose the device you want and BAM. You’re good to go.Sharing files and devices
A home network will also allow you the luxury of setting devices and resources as belonging to the whole network. Most homes will have multiple users with their own data and files. The problem is, some of those files are duplicates. Also, if the files are only in one place it means your home life becomes like an episode of The Walking Dead: a desperate struggle for limited resources in a post-apocalyptic wasteland (hopefully without the apocalyptic wasteland bit). The Nerds On Call home network service

While WiFi is an amazing technology, it has its limitations. Depending on the structure of your home and its size, WiFi may not cut it in terms of delivering a strong signal to every corner of your house. This is where running cable is always going to be the best solution but it’s not easy work! It takes a lot of know-how to do it right. Nerds On Call can help with this. We’ll improve your WiFi performance
We can also work wonders with WiFi. Not only can we tweak your modem and router to optimize their efficiency, we can also install a mesh of routers (that’s the hardware which sends the WiFi signal) throughout your house. While it won’t solve every problem, a mesh will greatly improve the network coverage throughout your home. We’ll network your devices
We’ll get all your devices communicating as they should. This means fewer remotes to keep track of, crazy cool options like streaming direct to your TV and the ability to share resources like files and devices throughout your whole home. Nerds On Call will come to your home and get your network integrating and working as it should. We’ll deal with connectivity challenges by running cable and improving your WiFi. We can also make sure all your devices are communicating with each other properly. Questions nerds often hear about Home Network Setup
What is a home network?
It’s how all your devices talk to one another. Your computer, your television, your printer – all these devices are able to connect to one another and work together through a home network.
Does making a network happen to require extra equipment?
If you have a modem and a router, this is sufficient for a basic network to be set up in your home. If you have an ethernet cable running through your home, all the better! If you don’t have the infrastructure in place we can provide a free estimate on how much it would cost to set up.
You seem strangely interested in iguanas. Should I be concerned?
Iguanas are awesome, but we won’t let our fascination with this wonderfully green, scaly companion get in the way of providing top quality service. We promise.
I have part of my house that doesn’t get good WiFi. Can you fix it?
Absolutely. We can either set your house up with a WiFi mesh network to improve your coverage. If that won’t cut it we can even run an ethernet cable through your house.
