You might need a nerd if…

  • You have lots of devices in your home but you can’t share files between them
  • You have areas in your house that don’t get a good Internet signal
  • You’re worried that your home network might not be secure

Home Network Integration: What Is It?

A lot of our customers say to us, “but I have a modem and a router! Doesn’t that mean I have a home network already?” The answer is yes … and no. It’s a home network in the sense that owning fifteen Star Wars t-shirts means you’re into high fashion.

Imagine you’ve got this awesome Yoda t-shirt. The problem is, it’s lime green and when you wear it with your brown corduroy pants you look like a tree. But if you wear it with a faded pair of jeans it looks just fantastic. This, in a nutshell, is the art of home networking. Sure it is equipment but it’s also a process. It involves interconnecting all of the devices in your home together in such a way that they can work together effectively and harmoniously – very much like a Yoda t-shirt works with an old pair of jeans.

Nerds On Call offers a home networking service. We’ll get all your devices working together perfectly and we’ll make sure your home Internet works everywhere in your house. If you’d like to learn more, call us at 1-800-919-6373 or fill out our contact form.

Why do I need a home network?

Here are a few examples of how a home network can make your life a whole lot easier.

Share files with any computer in the house

A lot of households have “the good computer.” It’s the new computer with a nice big hard drive and a big screen. Then there’s all the other devices. Maybe you have a few iPads around the house. Perhaps there’s an old desktop computer out in the garage.

sharing files

With a properly configured home network, all your devices can access files and programs stored on that good computer. No more painful process of transferring files from one device to another. Your home network allows you to have a one-stop-shop for all those files.

Share your peripherals

Just like you might have a family computer, you’re also likely to have one or more devices which are for everyone to use. For example, a printer. If you don’t have a home network, the only way to use these devices would be to transfer a file to the computer to which it’s attached. With a home network, that printer will be accessible to every device in the house. You can even print while you’re out!

Access your entertainment however you like

In-home entertainment

A home network opens up so many interesting options for entertainment. Picture watching your favorite Netflix shows in bed on your iPad or sending pictures and YouTube videos to your television. Maybe you’d like to be able to browse your cable television guide and record your favorite TV shows from your phone. All these possibilities and more become available when you have a properly configured home network.

Questions nerds often hear about Home Network Integration

Is home networking expensive?

Generally speaking, home networking need not be an expensive service. If you require runs of ethernet cable through your house, this will affect the cost of the service.

Do you really own a Yoda t-shirt?

Yes. Doesn’t everyone?

I only have one computer. Would a home network really help me?

You may only have one computer, but these days TVs, security systems, portable devices and much more are Internet-enabled. Ensuring they function well together will make a big difference.

The cable that connects from your modem/router to your computer gives you internet.

Also known as range extenders, Wifi signal boosters are small devices that connect to an electrical outlet and are intended to connect your existing wireless network and provide an extended range for its functionality. In practice, these are usually not reliable and are limited to the speeds available at the location they are plugged in at.
