Fresno MacBook Operating System Updates Service
If you own a Mac, every now and then, your machine will need a Mac operating system update. You might be wondering why. After all, if your computer is working fine, why add something to it? There are a few reasons why regular macOS updates are just a fact of modern computing life.
First of all, operating systems change and grow constantly. Some of those changes are just minor bug fixes or small improvements to the user interface. A Mac operating system update may also deal with more serious issues, like a security update to protect your machine against a new kind of malware or updated drivers to ensure your computer can run the latest software.
OK, so we’ve established the importance of macOS updates. The next obvious question is, how do you do them?
MacOS updates and why they’re important
The good news is, most of the time, these updates just manage themselves. Provided you have a stable internet connection, your Mac comes preconfigured to perform a Mac operating system update whenever a patch is released. You probably won’t even notice when it happens. Unfortunately, life isn’t always that easy. Macs are pretty low maintenance on the whole, but occasionally an automatic Mac operating system update may fail. It may just be that your Mac is getting quite old and auto-updates are no longer supported. Occasionally a driver configuration may railroad a macOS update, leaving your system locked in the OS equivalent of suspended animation.

If you’d like to try a DIY fix first, here are some simple tips you can try to complete a manual macOS update.
Step 1: Connect to a trusted network
A macOS update is not something you want to do using airport waiting lounge WiFi! These public WiFi services may be convenient for quick browsing, but they’re insecure and often unreliable. So make sure your Mac is connected to a network you can trust – preferably your own home network.
Step 2: Protect your data
Don’t get us wrong, in the overwhelming majority of cases, a Mac operating system update is a safe and non-destructive process. That said, your data is valuable, and it’s best not to mess around. A simple way to backup your data is to ensure Time Machine is turned on. You can check that via the Time Machine icon at the top of your screen. It looks like a little clock face with an anti-clockwise arrow. If you’re unsure of how to backup your own data, there’s a good chance we can help you in minutes via our remote assistance service.
Step 3: Install the macOS update file
Now that you’re all set up with a good network and protected data, it’s time to grab the update. Click on the Apple icon at the top of your screen, then select About This Mac, then Software Updates. Simply click on any update options you see. If you try that step and receive further errors, the best thing to do is check in with a Fresno nerd for advice.
Step 4: Signing in
A large Mac operating system update may log you out of your Mac. If that happens, you’ll be prompted to sign back in with your iCloud password. If you’re unsure of your password and don’t know how to retrieve it, again, your best way forward is to speak with us. We can help you retrieve your password and can even help you install a safe and secure password manager on your system.
How to perform a macOS update on an old Mac
Let’s say you own an older Mac and haven’t been able to perform a successful Mac operating system update for some time. It may be time to consider upgrading your computer. We can advise on the least expensive way to get your existing Mac back up to spec, or we can offer you good advice on a new machine.
As a first step, however, we can come to your Fresno home or place of work to see if a macOS update is still possible with your machine without any hardware upgrades. Here’s how we do that:
- First, we’ll make sure your data is safe! Data comes first.
- Then we’ll check your Mac against the minimum compatibility requirements specified in the Mac operating system update release notes.
- Then we will run a diagnostic of your Mac’s hardware. Limited hard drive space is an extremely common cause of a macOS update failure, so we’ll pay close attention to your hard drive capacity and offer advice on how to free up more space.
