The network card in your computer allows it to connect to the internet. IF your network card is damaged, or the proper drivers are for some reason not installed, you may notice your computer dropping internet signals, or loading content at a sluggish pace. The Nerds on Call recommend updating network cards if you notice any of these issues. Repairing network cards is usually not recommended since they are a relatively cheap piece of hardware.
