Without electricity, desktops would never be able to boot up. The power supply of a desktop is so often overlooked and shoved into a corner where it can overheat, causing other pieces of equipment to fail as well. If a power supply overheats and fails, it can cause a surge of power to spike through your machine, frying multiple hardware components. Another possibility is the power supply not feeding enough power to the cooling system, which could cause the entire system to overheat if the fans are not getting enough juice to fully function.
